Talking about the world

Album Review: The Light For Days - Jacob Collier

I saw that Jacob was releasing new music, but I wasn't aware it will be a full album, I'm still very fond of Djesse Vol.4 that it feels like it was yesterday that that album was released. Seeing 11 new songs surprised me and when I listened to it I was even more surprise as it was very different from his last album. I'm used to hearing production full of curious sounds and a lot of instruments in Jacob's music, but this album is the opposite: is quiet1. There are beautiful harmonies and interesting chord progressions that I'm used to hearing in his music, there is detail but minimal. For what I heard, pretty much a guitar and his voice.

This album came when I most needed it and reading the comments below each song, I think many people did too. I don't know how music does it but it finds me every time, in many situations it just fits at the right time. For me this album it's saying: relax! slow down! breath!, it's a sound that feels healing. The title "The light for days" perfectly describe it, it's like the typical phrase "The light at the end of the tunnel". Well, when I think about it, I guess his music has always been like this at its core.

I don't usually listen to calm music like this, maybe that's why it was a bigger (positive) shook for me. In a way it brought a brake away from the noise I'm used to, not just in music but in life, it gives you a quiet small time to enjoy and sit down. I really liked it and I think I'll play it every time I need a rest.

My favorites from the album are I Know (A Little) y Something Heavy, this last one became one of my favorites from him in general, It felt very personal and special since the first time I listened to it.

  1. I saw many people describing this change in the comments, one said that he went from maximalism to minimalism, I agree on that.
