My popcorn journey and some tips
I love popcorn, it's my favorite snack and I cook it pretty often at home. It's been years since I started to cooking it but until recently I haven't mastered the way of making perfect popcorn.
I first used a pot that had a bowl shape, I could do really good popcorn with it and it became my favorite. After many years it started to get very old so I had to change to a new one, I was so used to using this one that finding another one that worked as well was a tortured for me. It was like learning how to do popcorn all over again.
I've tried a lot of methods and a lot of different pots but it was pretty difficult for me to make good popcorn in every try, it was more like luck. Sometimes the method would work, sometimes not quite right and other times I would burn the whole thing (those were truly sad days). I had fun experimenting, but I wanted a solid method and that's how after searching online I came across this one. This article it's simple and goes straight to the point, just what I was looking for.
The method looked easy so I tried it and...it worked!, still I required some practice because there were some kernels left that didn't pop. I always had this problem before, either I burned some or there would be some left.
Then one day, I had very little kernels so I used a little pot that we use for boiling water, for my surprise that pot worked perfectly and the popcorn were almost perfect. The article says to use a big bowl so I've never considered using a small one, that was the first change I did to this method. Having a small pot I can easily manage the amount of popcorn and move the pot around.
Another change I did was for the sake of butter, the method doesn't mention where or how to add it in case we wanted so I did more experimenting. What worked the best for me was adding the oil, then butter and put the heat very low only enough for the butter to melt, when the butter is melted I add the kernels and change it to high heat. I follow the method since here.
I have tested this a few times now and with this changes I'm able to do really good butter popcorn!. At the end I don't think there is a universal method that can work for everyone and if you want to do great popcorn you should experiment and take from every method what works the best for you, the same way I took inspiration in the article I mentioned.
Additional tips from my experience that you should consider:
- Try every pot you have until you find the "perfect one"
- I usually put salt when I'm melting the butter too so the kernels take the salt from here, but I taste it at the end and add more if it's needed.
- The popcorn it's ready so fast and they can easily burn, you have to pay close attention.
- Lowing the heat when they're almost done really helped me.
- I put a paper towel in the bowl I'm serving so it can drain some of the oil excess if there is any.
As you can see I took very serious making my snacks hahah.
