Re: The issue with our attention
This is a respponse post to the latest gobino's bite post.
I think we all know that this issue exist, we can see it everyday when we are in a room and everyone it's using their phones instead of talking. It happened to me many times.
I'm not particularly a person that uses the phone much. When I was in middle school, I didn't had a smartphone and I would just look around while waiting or listening to music in my dumb phone. That's pretty much what I still do when I'm outside alone and I have nothing to do.
However, this change when I'm around people, since I'm a very introverted person I use the phone as an escape from socializing, to build a wall between me and other people. Also, if everyone is on their phone, I'll just join and do the same to not stand out. I started to do that a lot when I was in college and it became an habit. I would look constantly at my phone and my social abilities would decreased even more.
Then, one day I just was very tired to look at my phone, I wanted to rest my eyes so I just sit in a bench and did nothing, that felt really good. The weather was nice at the time but I didn't appreciated it until then. That day I discovered the importance of doing nothing and being present in the moment.
Steven wrote this and I find it very true:
Our ability to focus is like a muscle, and just like any muscle, it needs to be exercised. When we constantly rely on distractions, we weaken our capacity for deep thought, creativity, and connection.
I did lose some moments or opportunities in my life hiding behind a screen, I still do it sometimes, but not as an extreme as before. When I'm with my family, when I go out, I try to record everything I see in my memory.
