Thoughts about how to preserve my blog
I started without thinking much on how I'll save my writings or about the make of an archive. At the time I'd just write directly in Bearblog's editor, but the longer the post list got, the more I got attached to my writings. Then, I wanted to keep them in a save place, in case Bearblog disappears for some reason (not that I wanted to of course, just as a precaution). I found at the dashboard that you could download the blog's data as an CSV so from time to time I'd download that info and save those backups in my computer. But then I thought, "What if my computer gets broken?, I'd loose all this information!", that lead me to make a backup somewhere in the internet, lucky for me I know how to use git and GitHub.
With that in mind, now I have a repository where I upload the posts I write, is a little of a hassle to push my changes every time I write something and I do forget it sometimes, but is fine if I have my writings save enough, plus, I like having a history that I could go back if I wanted to.
Is a nice workflow that works for me, but recently I'm changing it again. A new thought appeared "what if I don't have internet? or I'm outside and don't have my computer close to write?", that's why I decided to keep a physical archive too, something that would exist as long as nobody threw it, or physical damaged it. It won't need passwords or any difficult process to read it, just like a book, you could pick it up and read it. The GitHub repository is an archive for me since I only have access to my account but this physical archive would be for everyone that would come across it.
I already take notes of ideas in my commonplace book, but never wrote a complete post, now I'm trying that my first drafts starts there. So right now my process is: write the complete post by hand, then typing it and polish it in my computer, then push changes to git and finally publishing it on Bearblog. Long process I know, but I like that I'll have a physical record of what I write and my writing has become so important for me that is not a bother at all.
For old posts I think I'll chose my favorites or more important to me, I'll print them and book bind them. I read the post "making posts into a zine" the other day and thought it was a cool idea so I'll try it!
