Write short stories!
When I dreamed to write a book I always thought that it would be a novel, not because I love novels (I do enjoy them) but because a novel is the usual. Instantly I'd feel burdensome, novels are long and I haven't be able to write something long till this day. However, I completely forgot about short stories, reading them as well as writing them, there are many ways to write a book apart from a novel that I hadn't considered. The more I read, the more I realize that.
So I started to read stories some time ago, just reading, I didn't write since for a long time I had writer's block, there was a point in time where writing fiction felt intimidating and even though I loved what I was reading at the time and I was inspired by it, I didn't feel like writing. I enjoyed reading more than writing I guess.
I fell in love with short stories, I find so interesting that you could write tiny parts of a characters' life, design a whole world and end up just narrating one day or a few moments in it, it seems very special to me. It doesn't have to be complicated, it could be simple and fun. You could of course made it as complicated as you want, with detailed scenarios and using all the length that you need, just enough.
For me short stories feel less limiting. I can give life to characters that otherwise wouldn't made it to a novel (mostly because I can't write too long, but what's better? writing something or nothing at all?). Maybe in the future I'll write more about them and slowly build their novel, but I can start by writing short stories, parts of it, and see how it goes.
Eventually, especially because writing became an habit thanks to blogging, I can write fiction again. All the inspiration I got before is making an effect right now. Lately I've been writing a lot more and most important I'm having fun! it makes me feel like a kid, writing silly stories without care. When I know I can write without worrying about length or even if this has to have an ending, ideas just come to me and I feel free to write them.
I recommend to try write short stories, even to people that think that they can't write. Write what first comes to your imagination, just like kids making up stories while playing with their toys.
I think it doesn't even matter if it's a short story, these only made me figure out that I can (should) write without pressure of style, genere or format. Because I'm writing for the joy of it, nothing more.
Enjoy writing if you do!
Thanks for reading :)
